The guoxue concept emerged during the early 20th century as a major concern in academic circles of that time. Some supported the concept, while some opposed it; as a field of endeavor, it has experienced ups and downs. The recent boom in Chinese studies has expanded beyond academic thinking and discussion to become a conscious consideration in socio-economic thinking and in the consideration of the people’s daily lives. The influence of Chinese studies has expanded because of attention given to it by the mass media and numerous people concerned with cultural development and its effects. Still, the true vitality of a culture or civilization is not limited to small clusters of thinkers; it is rooted in actual social life and practice. This social concern for the Chinese culture offers a way for us to better understand and develop the modern Chinese culture.

Today, Chinese studies are discussed and studied extensively because of the unique charms of the traditional Chinese culture, despite enormous pressures arising from the powerful influence of Western civilization and integration resulting from globalization.
